What's the first book you remember reading on your own?

Mine was Charlotte's Web

I know that I'd read stuff before then--I was one of those annoying kids who walked early and was reading comics in the newspaper before school age, but I didn't read anything specific until after my mom read Charlotte's Web to me and my brother and sister, one chapter a night before bed for what felt like forever. When I was done, I decided that I loved it so much, I was going to read it myself.

I was in probably first or second grade, and it's meant for older kids than that, so it looked impossibly huge, but I read it, a little at a time, for a very long time. I remember reading it when I was supposed to be reading boring early-reader short stories. I remember sitting on the floor with my back against the radiator, reading more.

After that, I knew I could read anything, and I read some of my favorite books: The Chronicles of Narnia, one after the other one summer; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass (Bantam Classics), while sitting under the table in the dining room; Tottie: The Story of a Dolls' House and The Snow Spider (Magician Trilogy 1), by the light in the hallway hours after I was supposed to be asleep. I read everything I could get my hands on, and thankfully, I had teachers who had built nice fat libraries in their classrooms.

What was the first book you remember reading? Have you read it since?
