2017 Reading Report!

I read a total of 34 books this year, out of a goal of 52. Not my goal, but three more than I managed last year, and there's several that I started that'll get finished to bolster my 2017 list, I think.

My favorites this year were:

- - -

- - -

Here's why I loved them so much:
  • A Gathering of Shadows is literally everything I ever want in an Epic Fantasy--with the bonus of also being a historical and a pirate story and also really cool.
  • All The Birds In The Sky is a near perfect blending of scifi and fantasy AND bridges the gap between contemporary and solarpunk!
  • Every Heart A Doorway is so clean and tight and lyrical, and then also answers the question "what happens to kids who come back from other-world adventures??" AND has a neatly diverse cast.
  • Throne of Glass hits a lot of the same things I like about Gathering of Shadows, despite being a pretty different book, and I can't wait to read more of the series.
  • You're Never Weird on the Internet is such an unflinching story of a weird life and a lot of anxiety, AND I got to meet Felicia Day to get it!
  • Mostly Void, Partially Stars is a printed edition of a radio show that happens on the internet, and it's a whole other thing reading it--much more literary than it seems when you're just listening.
  • Level Grind is what I've been looking for for a while: Urban Fantasy the way Dresden Files does it, but with a girl!
  • Best of Star Wars is just an overall awesome series, giving so much insight into the movies that it's mindboggling.

But I also read all the rest of these, too:

Overall, it was a good year for novellas, sequels to books I read last year, and re-reading kids' books I loved when I was little. It was also a good year for mixes of scifi and fantasy, and strange and wonderful new voices I've never read before.

I LOVE that novellas / short novels are coming back in fashion--they're much easier to read in a day, which is usually how my reading time is lately, and they mean there's lots more books in a series. Tor is knocking it out of the park with these high fantasy minis: complete worlds with ongoing stories. I absolutely adore it.
