Happy National Authors Day!

I knew I wanted to be an author from the second I finished all my dad's Anne McCaffrey books and picked up a pen to figure out what happened next. I wrote my first story that weekend (it was awful, but momentous) and from that point on, I've always wanted to be a writer. I write because I have stories to tell. I write because I have voices in my head that have stories to tell. I write because I'm disatisfied with the world, with the range of books in it, and with the stories being told. I write because I'm contrary and I want to say other things. I write because I like building new worlds more than I like interacting with the "real world". I write because people have always told stories, and I'm part of that tradition.

I want to celebrate the authors who defined my brain, my sense of story, my favorite books: Anne McCaffrey, Robin McKinley, Peter S Beagle, CS Lewis, Neil Gaiman, NK Jemisin, Cassandra Clare, Jim Butcher, PC Hodgell, and dozens of others I can't remember off the top of my head without all my books piled around me.

Why do you write? Who do you want to celebrate?
